Drove While You Were Sleeping Part 1
In a nation where millions are sleep deprived, we’re starting to see that this is becoming the norm. I mean you still hear people all the time, telling each other “oh yeah I only slept 3 hours last night”, or “I went to bed at 4am”. It’s almost as if people view their lack of sleep as an accomplishment.
Over 70 million people in this country alone suffer from a sleep related disorder. Whether it’s insomnia, sleep apnea, etc….all of these issues have one thing in common. Poor sleep quality. Now even if you aren’t suffering from a sleep related disorder, it doesn’t mean that you’ve been receiving the adequate amount of sleep. As I had mentioned before, there are so many out there who believe they’re able to function normally with minimal sleep. Yes this may be true, but what they don’t realize is that this could lead to opening up doors for serious health risks in the future.
The Role of Adequate Sleep:
- Fight off infection
- Support the metabolism of sugar to prevent diabetes
- Perform well in school
- Work effectively and safely
- Body rejuvenation
I’m not saying that it’s easy. I’m fully aware of the responsibilities that fall on many. Children, work, school, family life, etc…. it definitely adds up and barely leaves you with any additional time for what you want to do. Certain lifestyle changes can be hard to implement but with keeping a set goal in mind, it’ll get easier to achieve those goals.
So take all these facts and information, now imagine that all these people who have daytime fatigue(drowsiness) pile into their vehicles. Constant yawning, blurred vision, inattentiveness, these are the qualities sleep deprived drivers possess. It is a known fact being sleep deprived for 20 or more hours is on par with blood-alcohol content of 0.05 percent. So when you’re tired it’s good to think twice before operating a vehicle. These 2 ton (or more) machines are probably the most dangerous weapon any of us will have in our possession. Remember, while driving, you need to be aware of your surroundings as well as other drivers that could be affected.
Part 2 of the “Drove While You Were Sleeping” will be posted by the end of the week.
